John Peter Andersen

John Peter Andersen, 77, former public school teacher, died in Denver, CO on April 6th.

He was born on October 25, 1944 in Charles City, IA. Growing up, he was an Eagle Scout and proud graduate of Charles City High School’s class of 1963. Upon his return to the U.S., he earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado.

John taught math and Spanish at West Middle School, Overland High School, and Cherry Creek High School for a combined 31 years. His curiosity and service to the community continued beyond retirement, most notably in gardening and music.

He volunteered at the Denver Botanic Gardens for over a decade and became an expert in growing cactus and succulents. He also took up piano, volunteered at the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and made sure that all of his grandchildren had a piano to play.

He will be remembered for his quick wit and passion for life, friendships, and family. John is survived by his wife Carol Landeis, step-son Luke (Ashley) Hartwig, son Paul (Ryan) Andersen, daughter Mara Andersen, sister Jane (Leonard) Weisberger, former wife Deanie Andersen, and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Denver and Charles City in the coming months, details to follow.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in memory of John Andersen to the Iowa Fossil & Prairie Center or the Denver Botanic Gardens.
