Velma Schacher, (born Velma Landenberger), known to others as Kandee’s mom or Leila’s sister, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 12th, 2020 in Colorado. She was 76 years old. Velma was a native of Underwood, ND, but resided in Bismarck/Mandan for the majority of her life. She married Leon Schacher in April 1965, and they had one daughter, Kandee K Schacher. Her first occupation was that of a seamstress, and she continued to have various occupations throughout her life until she retired at the age of 72. Never one for sitting still too long, she was always up for an adventure and enjoyed running into people she knew. Her smile, sense of humor, and laughter were contagious and will be remembered by those who knew her best. Velma dedicated many hours volunteering, but held a special place in her heart for Special Olympic bowling. She loved being involved with all the athletes in Mandan for multiple years. She would make individual awards and trophies for each one at the end of the season. This simple act of kindness made her very popular but Velma won the grand prize with the joy it brought her. Velma also enjoyed selling yearly raffle tickets for Bis-Man women’s city bowling tournament. Whether you wanted a ticket or not, once Velma started talking to you, you were going to buy one! She helped at the McQuade softball tournament for many years as well. Lastly Velma was involved in the Bismarck/Mandan Relay For Life after surviving a courageous battle with breast cancer. Velma will be loving remembered by her daughter, Kandee Schacher, brothers Donald and Gary Landenberger, Sister Leila Landenberger, nephews, nieces, cousins and the numerous other people touched by Velma’s volunteer work and sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Helen Landenberger (Sayler), 2 brothers Gerald Landenberger and Larry Heinle. A Celebration of Velma’s life will be held in Bismarck, ND later this year. Memorial donations in memory of Velma can be made to Breast Cancer or Dementia Research and/or Special Olympics Bowling.
