Ruben Hernandez
Our father, Ruben Hernandez passed peacefully on November 22, 2020. After many years fighting cancer his body decided it was time to rest and meet loved ones in heaven. He was surrounded by love, prayers, zoom meetings, calls and family members present as he took his last breath.
Born to Consuelo Bracamontes Hernandez and Joe Hernandez in April of 1940 in Routt County, Colorado; he is survived by his sisters Beatrice, Pearl, Evelyn and his younger brother Ernie. His older brother Charlie was waiting for him in heaven.
One of our father’s greatest accomplishments was joining the US Marine Corps in 1958. He was a rifle sharpshooter and served in the motor pool in the Vietnam War. Honorably discharged in 1962 as a Command Leader Lance Corporal, he also served in the reserves until 1964. He was a proud Marine who showed strength, courage and the will power to battle anything that came his way.
Our father had many struggles in life, the biggest being declared legally blind at the age of 35. He found ways to make a living and to live independently despite his disability. He served on various committees for the blind and for the veterans, and was a member of the American Legion. He strived to find ways to make life easier for himself and others. He enjoyed taking classes and interacting with new technology created specifically for the blind.
Ruben was a charismatic storyteller, loving and generous. He loved music, telling jokes (most of which were dirty), working with his hands, technology, dancing and spending time with family. He had an enormous sense of humor and was known to bring a room into a roar of laughter. When he hugged you, you knew you were loved. He accepted Christ as his lord and savior just weeks before his passing.
Ruben Hernandez’s legacy will live on through his 6 biological children Irma, Debbie, Ruben, Evelyn, Ray and Connie. He was also beloved by the children he raised Lori, Charity and Eddie. Combined he has 23 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Ruben will also be forever remembered by his numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and extended family and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date as we work to honor our fathers wishes for his final rest.
